Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that can be caused by numerous factors. For instance, when muscles are weakened by a condition like cerebral palsy, this can lead to a curvature of the spine that worsens over time. Some children have been born with scoliosis due to the fact that their spine did not develop properly in the womb. However, there is no evidence that scoliosis can result from bad posture.
Bad Posture Does Not Cause Scoliosis
While there has been no evidence to prove bad posture causes this condition, bad posture, in general, can have a detrimental effect on your overall health.
The causes of scoliosis are many and varied, but typically the condition only results from genetic factors or neuromuscular / skeletal deterioration. Poor posture has never been a recognized cause of scoliosis.
The Results Of Bad Posture
Bad posture can affect your overall health in a few different ways, including:
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Back pain
- Arm pain
Bad Posture And Scoliosis
Human skeletons are supported mainly by muscles and ligaments. The center of gravity of the skeleton will vary when its alignment is altered. This ultimately affects how much the muscles have to work in order to maintain stability.
“Bad posture” refers to posture in which the body structures have to work harder just to maintain a specific position. “Good posture” is when your muscles do not have to work overtime just to maintain a position.
The ideal posture is an upright posture. This means when looked at from the side, the ear is right above the shoulder, with the shoulder right above your hip. Sitting slouched or slanted to one side will require more work out of your muscles.
