Sciatica causes a lot of people a lot of pain but read on to learn of some myths we can dispel.

MYTH: Sciatica will just “go away” with some rest.
FACT: If you are dealing with back pain, buttock pain or leg pain, then you must seek help from a sciatica specialist immediately. Left untreated, sciatica can lead to permanent nerve damage.

MYTH: Pain is the only problem associated with sciatica.
FACT: In severe cases, sciatica can lead to the inability to control your bowels or bladder.

MYTH: You must take pain medications to deal with sciatica.
FACT: Drugs like muscle relaxants, pain killers, narcotics, antidepressants, and anti-seizure medications have serious potential side-effects and do not cure the root cause of sciatica.

MYTH: “I must have done something wrong to get sciatica.”
FACT: Physical work or simply sitting at a desk for long periods can lead to sciatica. Accidents and trauma can also be the culprits. Pregnancy can cause sciatica. Sciatica can affect anyone.

MYTH: Stop exercising and get several weeks of bed rest to overcome sciatica.

FACT: Staying active can help to relieve sciatic pain and prevent the pain from getting worse. Staying inactive in bed could be the worst advice.

MYTH: Sciatica requires surgery.
FACT: NO! There’s been a huge breakthrough in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain. It’s a new procedure called Non-Surgical Re-Constructive Spinal Care. The excellent results from this treatment have been published in major medical journals. Success rates are up to 90%.

People experiencing pain from headaches often turn to chiropractic care for help. Read on to learn more.

According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA): “Research shows that spinal manipulation – one of the primary treatments provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck. A 2014 report in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) found that interventions commonly used in chiropractic care improved outcomes for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain and increased benefit was shown in several instances where a multimodal approach to neck pain had been used. Also, a 2011 JMPT study found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches.”

Triggers

Triggers may include foods, noise, stress, lights as well as behaviors such as excessive exercise, insomnia and blood sugar changes. 95 percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease; the headache itself is the primary concern. The primary cause of headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. Today, Americans engage in more sedentary activities than in the past, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture.

What Can Be Done

The American Chiropractic Association offers the following advice:

  • If you spend a lot of time in one fixed position, for example, in front of a computer, on a sewing machine, typing or reading, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour.
  • Low-impact exercise may relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise, activities as walking and low-impact aerobics may be of benefit.
  • Avoid teeth clenching.  This results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) – the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull – leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches.
  • Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.

What Can Chiropractic Care Do?

  • Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system.
  • Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and perhaps the addition of B complex vitamins.
  • Offer advice on posture, ergonomics, exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice should help to relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.

Sciatica impacts more than three million people in the US and can cause constant pain and nerve damage that starts in the spine and shoots down the rear portion of the leg. However chirpractic care can help. read on to learn more.

What Is The Sciatic Nerve?

The longest nerve in the human body it is a group of five nerves exiting from the lumbar spine and sacral foramen. They group together in the muscles of the buttocks and form a sciatic nerve that travels down each leg. The sciatic nerve provides strength to the legs and connects with major muscle groups and the spinal cord. When the nerve is impaired, numbness, pain and weakness may result.

Symptoms Vs. Diagnosis

Sciatica is really a set of symptoms as opposed to a diagnosis. Here are some of the symptoms to look for:

Piriformis syndrome (muscle in the buttocks becomes tight or spasms), spondylolisthesis (slippage of a vertebra, narrowing the nerve exit), general wear and tear on the lower spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal creates pressure on nerves), slipped or herniated discs (the most common cause.)

Risk Factors

As we get older, risk increases for sciatic nerve issues due to age-related changes in the spine.  Obesity also can increase risk, as excess weight can contribute to spinal changes. Diabetes increases risk of nerve damage, and is another risk factor for sciatica. Other lifestyle factors such as occupation and prolonged sitting can play a role in the development of sciatica.

Research

Chiropractic care and adjustments are a viable option for treating the pain and symptoms associated with sciatic nerve issues. A 2006 study published in Spine found that manipulations (adjustments) helped relieve pain due to acute back pain and sciatica. Another study published in 2010 found that sixty percent of sciatica patients (who hadn’t found relief from other therapies) experienced the same level of relief from chiropractic adjustments as patients who eventually had surgery.

If you use your hands a lot you may find they are in pain at the end of the day. Instead of taking medication,a a chiropractor may be able to help your pain symptoms and restore some range of motion back to your hands. Read on to learn more.

Bone Realignment

Your hand pain may be as a result of bone misalignment in your back or neck as the nerves in your hand originate at your spinal cord. If you have a slipped disc, it can cause the compressing of the nerves leading back to your hands, causing pain or numbness.

Inflammation Reduction

Chiropractors use social methods reducing the pain in your hands and wrists especially if you have arthritis or carpal tunnel. Electronic muscle stimulation can be used or tissue massage or ultrasound can all help relieving the pressure you are under. As the pain subsides you should find your range of motion gaining once again.

Stretches and Exercise

Once the pain has gone away the chiropractor can show you stretches and exercises to help keep everything properly aligned. You can do these between visits to the chiropractor and prior and after doing certain activities. Very useful for people who regularly utilize electronic devices and keyboards.

Chiropractic or Massage Therapy

PRINCIPLES OF CHIROPRACTIC

Chiropractic treatments are tailored to address and cure neuromusculoskeletal disorders and focus on realigning misplaced spinal vertebrae to restore optimal nervous system function. Pinched nerves, strained lower back muscles, neck discomfort, and sciatica are all relieved by spinal adjustments and manipulations without the need for surgery or unnecessary prescription prescriptions. Dr. King’s spinal adjustments also decompress the spine, improving blood flow throughout the body and facilitating the exchange of nutrients at wounded locations. Chiropractic therapy sessions that include an adjustment and manipulation often last less than an hour. Many patients report positive outcomes within 24 hours after treatment.

MASSAGE THERAPY FUNDAMENTALS

Massage treatment, like chiropractic medicine, treats pain holistically by improving circulation, relieving the discomfort of stiff, strained muscles, and stimulating the release of endorphins into the bloodstream. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland create endorphins, which are pain-relieving chemicals. Exercising boosts endorphin production, which helps to alleviate muscle discomfort and weariness. Your muscles, tendons, and ligaments are fooled into believing you’re exercising when you get massage therapy. A large rise of endorphins occurs as a result of this. Following a therapeutic massage session with Dr. King, patients report feeling incredibly relaxed, more flexible, and tranquil.

WOULD YOU CHOOSE CHIROPRACTIC OR MASSAGE THERAPY IF YOU WERE IN PAIN?

Chiropractic treatments often focus on realigning the spine and neck vertebrae to relieve back, neck, and headache pain, but they can also include therapeutic massage techniques including deep tissue, sports, and myofascial massage. Massage therapy stimulates cell metabolism and promotes the creation of new cells in inflammatory areas by manually “working out” muscles and ligaments. Chiropractic treatments, on the other hand, are aimed to relieve nerve pressure caused by misplaced vertebrae squeezing and aggravating spinal nerves.

Because your muscles and skeleton have such a strong, symbiotic link, the answer to this question is simple–choose both! Massage therapy, in addition to chiropractic treatments, is a terrific approach to effectively relieve a wide range of bone, joint, and muscle disorders while also contributing to your general health and well-being.

People experiencing wrist pain often turn to chiropractic care for help. Read on to learn more.

The wrist is complex and performs complex movements.  Additionally, nerves, muscles, bones, and other tissues not only of the wrist itself but of the fingers, hand, forearm, elbow, upper arm, and spine can also be involved in wrist pain, so it can be manifested in many ways.

Wrist Pain Causes

Wrist pain can be caused by any of a number of different reasons. It can be caused by normal wear and tear, by overuse, by injury, or through the natural aging processes, or a systemic disease process to name a few of the more common causes. Wrist pain caused by any reason should get an accurate diagnosis and can benefit greatly from medical attention by a qualified healthcare provider. Here are some examples of the causes of wrist pain:

Peripheral Nerve Entrapments

Known as a pinched nerve, this is when a nerve becomes literally impinged or entrapped by the surrounding tissue, be that bone, muscle, tendon, or cartilage.

Pronator Syndrome

A peripheral entrapment neuropathy that occurs when the median nerve of the arm becomes compressed between muscles of the forearm. Prolonged gripping, twisting, and pronation, as in working with construction equipment, can lead to this condition.

Radial Tunnel Syndrome

When the radial nerve becomes compressed in a canal in the elbow called the radial tunnel. Symptoms of this condition are often mistaken for tennis elbow.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

When pressure is put on the median nerve, it can cause pain and numbness or tingling sensation in the thumb and the closest next two and one-half fingers.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

When pressure is put on the ulnar nerve of the hand, it can cause the ring finger and pinky finger to swell and become weak or clumsy. Pain, numbness, and tingling in these two fingers are also symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome.

This article is from WebMD regarding how COVID-19 is impacting Chiro care.

Social Distancing and Essential Chiropractic Care

Brandon Czekaj, D.C. and certified chiropractic sports practitioner in Virginia, is limiting the number of patients he is currently seeing, but there are some people who can’t delay or forgo chiropractic care.

“We are in a pandemic, but that does not stop people from suffering from musculoskeletal conditions,” Czekaj says. Because those with musculoskeletal conditions may end up in emergency rooms or hospitals without treatment, continuing to see those patients can reduce strain on the health care system, Czekaj says.

Musculoskeletal disorders refer to conditions that affect the muscles, ligaments, tendons or bones, and are the leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Chiropractic care is one form of treatment for this kind of pain, and stopping treatment is not an option for many patients with a musculoskeletal condition.

“If they have an acute musculoskeletal condition, such as sciatica, it can have a debilitating effect on the amount of pain they are having,” Czekaj says.

The Illinois Chiropractic Society recommends that chiropractors postpone or cancel appointments with patients receiving maintenance care or who have reached a point of maximum medical improvement, while still continuing to treat musculoskeletal pain patients. The American Chiropractic Association also deems treatment for musculoskeletal conditions as essential for “helping triage and manage cases that otherwise may end up in emergency rooms.”

Can Chiropractic Care Boost Your Immune System?

Some claims have been made that chiropractic care can boost your immune system, but the World Federation of Chiropractic refutes these claims, saying “There is no credible scientific evidence that chiropractic spinal adjustment/manipulation confers or boosts immunity. Chiropractors should refrain from any communication that suggests spinal adjustments/manipulation may protect patients from contracting COVID-19 or will enhance their recovery.”

Unless you have a musculoskeletal condition or otherwise deal with debilitating pain you need chiropractic care to treat, it’s best to postpone your in-person chiropractic appointments until social distancing mandates are lifted.

Alternatives to Seeing a Chiropractor in Person

If you aren’t able to see your chiropractor in person, it doesn’t mean you have to go without care. Telemedicine is an option in many places, or your chiropractor may be able to talk you through exercises and stretches over the phone.

“People should still reach out if they are in pain,” Czekaj says. “There may be ways to help while still social distancing.”

According to the Illinois Chiropractic Society, many different chiropractic services can be offered via telehealth including:

  • Rehab services and range-of-motion therapies
  • Assessing symptoms and evaluating patient progress
  • Functional medicine
  • Some primary care services
  • Postural stretching techniques

“With the recent COVID-19 outbreak, chiropractors are able to help people in pain with recommendations and postural stretching techniques without having the patient leave their home,” says Allen Conrad, D.C. “This way the patient can consult with the chiropractor about what injuries they are experiencing and the chiropractor can demonstrate and explain through telehealth what exercises they can do at home.”
